چکیده

I n a prior communication we demonstrated that transection of the optic nerve of the cat with consequent retrograde neuronal degeneration did not lead to alteration of the ipsilateral retinal vasculature. We interpreted this to mean that retinal neuronal degeneration does not, of itself, cause an associated vascular degeneration. In the present study the vasculature of the optic disc region of the cat was examined after optic nerve transection.

Finite element modeling of optic nerve head biomechanics.

PURPOSE Biomechanical factors have been implicated in the development of glaucomatous optic neuropathy, particularly at the level of the lamina cribrosa. The goal of this study was to characterize the biomechanics of the optic nerve head using computer modeling techniques. METHODS Several models of the optic nerve head tissues (pre- and postlaminar neural tissue, lamina cribrosa, central reti...

Increased elastin expression in astrocytes of the lamina cribrosa in response to elevated intraocular pressure.

PURPOSE To determine whether abnormal elastin synthesis in the glaucomatous optic nerve head and lamina cribrosa is due to elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) or secondary to axonal injury, monkeys with elevated IOP and with optic nerve transection were compared. METHODS Unilateral, chronic elevated IOP was induced in 11 rhesus monkeys by laser scarification of the trabecular meshwork. IOP wa...

Cerebrospinal Fluid Pressure and Glaucoma

Eyes with normal-pressure glaucoma and those with high-pressure glaucoma can show a similar optic nerve head appearance, while eyes with vascular optic neuropathies show a markedly different optic disc appearance. Factors in addition to intraocular pressure (IOP) may thus play a role in the pathogenesis of glaucomatous optic neuropathy. Clinical and experimental studies showed that (1) physiolo...

Morphology of the murine optic nerve.

PURPOSE To study the morphology of the murine optic nerve (ON). METHODS Eyes of C57/Bl6 and BalbC mice were studied by light and electron microscopy. Microvascular castings of the ON region were prepared by transcardial injection of liquid plastic and studied with a scanning electron microscope. Immunohistochemistry was performed using antibodies against glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP)...

Anatomic relationship between lamina cribrosa, intraocular space, and cerebrospinal fluid space.

PURPOSE The lamina cribrosa, as the main structural element of the optic nerve head, forms a pressure barrier between the intraocular space and the retrobulbar space. The function as a pressure barrier may have importance for the pathogenesis of ocular diseases related to intraocular pressure and/or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure, such as the glaucomas. The purpose of the present study was ...
